Every year on 13th August, left-handed people across the world get their moment in the spotlight.
International Left-Handers Day isn’t just about recognising that we use a different hand to write — it’s about celebrating the unique perspectives, creativity, and adaptability that come with being part of the roughly 10% of the population who lead with their left.
As a proud left-hander myself, I know that being left-handed is more than just a physical trait — it’s a whole experience. From childhood to adulthood, there’s a collection of little quirks, challenges, and triumphs that make the left-handed life one-of-a-kind.
Growing Up Left-Handed
If you’re a leftie, you’ll probably remember the first time you realised you were “different.” For me, it was at school, not being able to cut with the scissors and wondering what you were doing wrong, before being handed scissors with a different coloured handle and instantly they worked! Then there were the battles with the smudged pencil/pen marks across the side of my hand, and the awkward wrist angles needed to write neatly without turning my page sideways.
While some people might see these things as inconveniences, I think they’ve given me an advantage in life. They taught me resilience early on, forced me to problem-solve creatively, and made me more adaptable when facing challenges.
The Right World for the Left-Handed
It’s no secret that most of the world is built for right-handers. Tools, gadgets, and even everyday objects like can openers, musical instruments, and cameras often cater to the majority. This means lefties are constantly making micro-adjustments — learning to use something in reverse, modifying our technique, or simply finding our own way to get the job done.
And honestly? I think that’s part of our superpower. We don’t just follow the “standard” way of doing things; we’re used to working out our own methods. That mindset can spark creativity and problem-solving skills that we carry into all areas of life.
Famous Left-Handers Who Inspire
We’re in good company too. History is filled with remarkable left-handed people:
Leonardo da Vinci – a genius artist and inventor who literally changed the way we see the world.
Marie Curie – a pioneering scientist whose research still impacts us today.
Barack Obama – proving leadership can be both bold and inspiring.
Oprah Winfrey – a storyteller and visionary who built an empire.
Rafael Nadal – showing how left-handedness can even be a sporting advantage.
Knowing that so many talented and influential figures were lefties makes me feel even more proud to be part of the club.
The Little Left-Handed Joys
There’s something oddly heartwarming about spotting another leftie. Whether it’s sharing a nod of solidarity at a dinner table while juggling cutlery, or laughing together about the eternal spiral notebook struggle, it’s a connection that instantly makes the world feel a little smaller.
And there are perks too. We’re harder to predict in sports, our brains process information slightly differently, and we often have a flair for thinking outside the box. Plus, every so often, we get to enjoy the novelty of a left-handed gadget — like the rare but wonderful left-handed mug with the design facing the right way for us.
Why I’m Celebrating Today
For me, being left-handed is a small but significant part of my identity. It’s a reminder that differences can be strengths, that adapting builds resilience, and that sometimes the less common path can lead to unexpected advantages.
So today, I’m celebrating all the lefties — past, present, and future — who’ve navigated a right-handed world with creativity, adaptability, and style. Whether you’re painting a masterpiece, cooking dinner, or just trying to use a pair of scissors without feeling like you’re in a puzzle game, you’re part of something special.
And to the right-handers in our lives — we love you too, but maybe just for today, try writing your name with your left hand. You might discover a whole new appreciation for the “other side.”
Here’s to the smudged ink, the creative solutions, the adaptability, and the pride that comes with being a leftie.
Happy Left-Handers Day!
