It’s time for change! People with disabilities who like or need to travel deserve the same rights as those without disabilities who like or need to travel. We deserve to travel with the expectation that we, and our equipment will be treated with the respect and dignity we deserve.
As a wheelchair user myself, I am often anxious before I fly because there are a number of questions I ask myself; Is the assistance at the airport going to know I'm there and what help I need? Will the carry on chair have the correct straps to keep me safe while being lifted onto the plane and into my seat? Will there be similar assistance waiting at my destination? Then there's my wheelchair and equipment; will it arrive with me at my destination? Will it arrive in one piece and without damage? If it is damaged what I am going to be able to do and what support will I be offered?
These are all things many don't have to think about and sometimes even those whose job it is to help aren't there or don't know. So many times I've been left waiting for my wheelchair on uncomfortable and unsupportive equipment. So many times I'm left on the plane waiting for the people needed to assist me. 5-10 minutes nobody really minds but when it's 30 or 60 minutes or even longer you often begin to wonder what could you do to make things better...
An exciting new campaign has launched today here in the UK by Disability Rights UK; Disability Advocate and TV Presenter, Sophie Morgan and MP Marion Fellows, with the hope that the government will give powers to the UK Civil Aviation Authority to impose fines and stricter regulations.
